I'll be heading out to the blueberry patches this weekend. From the various locations that I check, it looks like it will be a so-so year for the blueberry. I anticipated more berries this year with all the rain we received and the ample sun, but alias, the blue berry is a fickle little guy.
Maybe someone else can comment, but I've come across blueberry bushes that seem to be healthy, but for many years in a row no berries. I wonder if blueberries go through seasons where they don't produce any. Then again, I've had patches that I've checked year after year with nothing, then all of a sudden a bumper crop of berries.
Keep an eye out for the Jack Pine growing out of the ledge rock, for me that's where berries like to hide.

Blueberries
Monday August 4th 2008Some areas are seeing bumper crops and they are just ripening now. They are late but they are plentiful.
A so-so year of blueberries.
Tuesday August 5th 2008A so-so year of blueberries. I went out this last weekend to the half dozen secrete spots I have to pick berries. Only two of them had berries enough to compel me to sit down and fill my bucket.
In a few hours I was able to pick an gallon ice cream bucket almost to the rim. Maybe I'm just a blueberry snob, but I didn't think the picking was very good this year. Oh well, there is always next year.
