Dehydrator for great backcountry fun

shane's picture

My wife and I just bought a new dehydrator and I am quite pleased with it.  It's a Excalibur horizontal 9 tray. We really love it, we've made banana chips (much better than store bought), deer jerky, lots of other fruit.  The dried potatoes even worked good.

Does anyone have a food dehydrating favorite food.  We're looking for more things to dry and wondered if someone has a recommendation.

That's a pricey dehydrator.

That's a pricey dehydrator. The Ronco can be found on garage sales for $5 and works just fine. You can even find them on ebay for only $30.

$200+ on a food dehydrator is just too many clams for me.

I agree, a dehydrator is

I agree, a dehydrator is necessary for a serious camper. You can buy the Mountain House dinners, but they don't taste too well and are pretty spendy. Jerky is a staple ouput of our dehydrator as well as dried fruit.

I tried oranges and they didn't turn out very good, so skip oranges.

tater tot hot dish

last summer i baked a large casserole of tater tot hot dish then fully dehydrated it. 5 trays in my excalibur. very light, then put it in a large zip-lock freezer bag. keeps a looong time. when it was time to cook simply put in a pan, cover with water for a few minutes, heat and eat. make sure you rinse the burger in hot water to remove as much fat as possible.will take minced garlic along this year as rinsing the burger seemed to rinse this out too. as any new recipe try before you go
