Boy Scout Dutch Oven

shane's picture

I'm an Eagle Scout and remember very clearly taking the dutch oven on all the cookouts we went on (except hiking). It's a handy little device that makes delectable cobblers such as apple, cherry, peach, or even blueberry.

I'm older now and subscribe to the ultra-light backpacking method, but deep down inside I want to bring a dutch oven and cook up some great vittles with the oven. Anyone else just throw caution to the wind and lug the big dutch oven along in the BW?

Dutch Oven

Check out the Aluminum Dutch Ovens at GSI (gsioutdoors.com). Maybe you can have the best of both worlds?

@nowicki2742, Thanks! I'll

@nowicki2742,

Thanks! I'll check it out. Maybe it's time to go a little heavier in the pack and a lot tastier on the palate.

Rome Cookware Dutch Oven

If you are going with a larger group you may want to consider the Rome Cookware brand Quetico Superior cast aluminum rectangular dutch oven/griddle/deep fryer. The lid makes a perfect griddle, the main part makes a perfect deep fryer for fish, and the griddle used as a lid on the deep fryer makes a great dutch oven for corn bread, cakes, and all sorts of baked goodness.

This is probably heavier and bulkier than the Boy Scout dutch oven you've used (though probably about the same weight as the GSI round version mentioned in an earlier post), but it is very functional for a larger canoe camping trip. I use it on my larger guided canoe trips (www.boundarywatersguideservice.com). It is a dream to cook with.

Also, FYI, the Sommers Boy Scout High Adventure Base near Ely has used some great small, round, lightweight dutch ovens, but their manufacturer no longer makes them, and now the Boy Scouts are also having a really difficult time finding a good small dutch oven.

Rome Cookware Dutch Oven

I tried the Rome Cookware site, and the item was listed as discontinued. It is a rectangular cast dutch oven about 3 inches deep, and made to fit fully on top of the 2 burner Colman Stove. The Griddle/cover is fitted on top for baking. There are two handles that stick out 6 inches on the deep fryer so you can hold it with both hands, and one handle in the middle of the griddle so you can lift it without the bottom handles being in the way. I found one at Sherpers. They also have a deep fry basket that you can sink into the bottom half. It weighs about 5 lbs for the combo, which is comperable to a 12 inch aluminum cast round dutch oven, and more versitile. It is harder to pack due to the handles sticking out, but works so well that it is worth it. Only reservation is for people who have an aversion to cooking in aluminum pots for health reasons.

Rome cookware dutch oven

We've used these rectangular cast aluminum deep fryers for years on our canadian wilderness trips and at home and when camping. We have two of them.

I called Rome Industries in December (last month) to see about buying another and was informed that they were discontinued.

I've written to the sales and marketing person there asking that they consider re-introducing them.

There is really nothing else like them on the market.

Regarding cooking in aluminum: Our units are so well seasoned, that not much comes in contact with the aluminum anymore!
