This is a simple breakfast that sticks to the ribs. My family has always called it "Black Bear on Toast", but really it's just Dried Beef gravy on toast.
Ingredients
- Dried Beef (Stuff that comes in a jar)
- Corn Starch
- Salt/Pepper
- Butter
- Milk (Powdered)
- Bread (english muffins work good)
At Home
The ratio is one table spoon of corn starch to a cup of milk. Figure out how much powdered milk you need to make a cup and mix that in with one table spoon of corn starch (e.g. three tbsp corn starch + three cups of powdered milk). Put this into a zip lock bag and with a black marker label what it is and how much water to add. Chop up the dried beef and add this to the zip lock bag as well
In Camp
- Add the correct amount of water to your corn starch / powdered milk bag.
- Heat slowly in a pot, constantly stir it (milk scorches easily).
- Add salt and pepper to your gravy mix.
- Toast some bread (throw butter on both sides and put it in a skillet is one way).
- Pour the gravy over the toast and eat.
