Plan Ahead and Prepare
- Bring life jackets for everyone
- Carry a compass and map; know how to use them
- Notify friends and family of your route and expected return date
- Bring a First-Aid kit
- Glass containers and cans are not allowed in the BWCAW
- No more than 9 people and 4 water crafter in a single location.
- Portage wheels are prohibited except along certain routes
Low Impact Camping
- Place packs and canoes on bare ground or rock
- Only camp at sites with a firegrate and latrine
- Don't make camp furniture
- Do not dig trenches
Proper Waste Disposal
- Pick up even the smallest garbage
- It's illegal to burn trash
- Latrines are for toilet, not trash
- Wash dishes at least 150' from shore
Campfires
- Keep campfire small and inside fire grate
- Use only dead firewood for campfire
- Put fire completely out when leaving camp or going to sleep.
- Campfire should be cool to the touch.
Respect Wildlife
- Keep noise down and give animals enough space
- Dispose of fish remains away from camp and away from shore
- Hang your bear bag or use bear resistant containers
